I've been playing crown green bowls ever since I was 8 years old.
It used to be described as an old man's sport but nowadays there's as many younger players as there are elderly ones.
My dad introduced me to the game as he was a member of our local village bowling team ( Denby Dale Bowling Club ) and one rainy and cold Saturday at a league game at Springwood bowling club the team realised they were a man short, and I got thrown in literately in the deep end and I played. I lost 21-12 but was happy to get 12.
Since those early days in the early 1960's and considering I took nearly 30 years out of the game when my work took me on travels throughout the UK , I have played well over 1,500 league games for DDBC and 5 years ago rejoined the club and enjoy playing regularly.
